TRAINING EFFICIENCY

Let’s set up your new power meter so you can start achieving your cycling goals. No matter how or where you ride, a power meter can enhance your experience. From training for your first fondo, to improving your sprint for your next crit, SRAM power meters offer an option for every kind of rider.

CONSISTENCY INDOORS AND OUT

Continue to use the trainer you likely already have while gaining power measurement capability when riding indoors! This gives you access to virtual riding platforms like Zwift.

TRACK TRAINING PROGRESS

What gains are you making? Use power meter data to know when you are ready for the next stage in your training.

MANAGING TRAINING STRESS AND RECOVERY

If you are dedicated to training hard, you can pretty much guarantee that you will overtrain at some point and sabotage your hard-earned progress. Power meters help you to know when you need to rest to keep the gains you've worked hard for.

UNDERSTAND YOUR CAPABILITY

Are you ready for that big ride or race? An accurate power meter removes any doubts and replaces it with reliable data you can trust. Be confident in the knowledge that your fitness improvements are real.

STEP 1: INSTALL

The spider-based power meters attach to AXS cranksets using a simple 8-bolt interface. To install one, remove your driveside crank arm using a hex wrench long enough to apply the 54 Nm of force required to back out the fixing bolt. Then remove the eight Torx T20 bolts that attach the crank spider or chainring assembly to the crank. If applicable, we recommend removing the chainrings using a Torx T30 wrench before removing the eight spider fixing bolts.

STEP 2: CONNECT TO AXS APP

Log in to the SRAM AXS App and add your power meter to your bike profile. Check your power meter’s firmware to make sure it’s up to date.

TECH TIP: When connecting to the AXS App, make sure your phone has good signal and is not connected to any other Bluetooth devices. Enable Bluetooth in your phone settings for the app, and then connect to your power meter.

STEP 3: CALIBRATE

Spider-based power meters use Magic Zero technology to automatically calibrate the power meter for you, so you never need to worry about calibration! MagicZero works by continuously monitoring the torque signals from the strain gages as you ride, so you can focus on the road ahead.

STEP 4: PAIR TO BIKE COMPUTER

Get the most out of your power meter by pairing it with a cycling computer to understand your efforts in real-time and save the data to track your progress. With a Hammerhead Karoo, pairing is automatic when you sign in using your SRAM account. For other bike computers, consult your manual for pairing instructions.

STEP 5: CHECK YOUR BATTERY STATUS

You’ll get approximately 200 ride hours of battery life from a single CR2032 coin cell battery. To check the status, watch the LED on the crank spider while waking your power meter with a half-turn backpedal. If the LED flashes red, it’s time to change the battery. You can also view battery status in the AXS App and on your Hammerhead Karoo or ANT+ bike computer.

TECH TIP: Some batteries have a child-safe bitter coating. This coating interferes with SRAM battery contacts and is not compatible with SRAM power meters.

SPINDLE-BASED POWER METERS

STEP 1: INSTALL

The spindle-based power meters are integrated into the DUB spindle, so upgrading is easy. To swap out your non-drive side crank arm to an AXS power meter upgrade, turn the 8mm hex bolt on the drive side arm counterclockwise until the drive side arm comes off, then pull the non-drive side arm and spindle out of the bike. Pick up your new AXS power meter upgrade arm and spindle, grease the spindle, and slide it into the BB. Then install your drive side crankarm by torquing it to 54 Nm and set your preload.

STEP 2: CONNECT TO AXS APP

Log in to the SRAM AXS App and add your power meter to your bike profile. Check your power meter’s firmware to make sure it’s up to date. You can also double-check your battery status while you’re here.

TECH TIP: When connecting to the AXS App, make sure your phone has good signal and is not connected to any other Bluetooth devices. Enable Bluetooth in your phone settings for the app, and then connect to your power meter.

STEP 3: CALIBRATE

Perform the Manual Zero calibration process in the AXS App. For the best accuracy, repeat the Manual Zero process before each ride. You can also use your bike computer to quickly complete the process once it’s connected to your power meter.

STEP 5: CHECK YOUR BATTERY STATUS

With a replaceable lithium AAA battery inside the spindle, you'll ride worry-free with 400+ ride hours of battery life. To check the status, watch the LED on the non-drive side spindle while waking your power meter with a half-turn backpedal. If the LED flashes red, it’s time to change the battery. You can also view battery status in the AXS App and on your bike computer.

TECH TIP: Only use lithium AAA batteries, not alkaline, in your spindle-based power   meter. This ensures consistent operation, maximum battery life, and prevents corrosion.

TRAINING TOOLS

Whether you favor indoor or outdoor training, there are several digital tools and training programs that can help improve your fitness by interpreting your power meter metrics. These training tools offer something for everyone. For more info, check out their websites and apps.

INDOOR TRAINING TIPS

A power meter is a crucial piece of your training setup, both in the pain cave and on the road. No matter your type of indoor trainer, a power meter will enhance your experience.

  • If you have a smart trainer for indoor riding, capture power data straight from your power meter rather than your trainer to keep your data consistent from outside to inside.
  • If you have a standard indoor trainer, your power meter will make it “smart” by allowing you to capture power and cadence data and transmit it to your bike computer.
  • Your power meter can connect directly to a Bluetooth-compatible device, like an iPad, while using the Zwift app.
  • For Hammerhead Karoo users, your Karoo has an indoor training feature to help capture and visualize power output, time on bike, cadence, and more.

HAMMERHEAD DASHBOARD

With a SRAM power meter and a Hammerhead Karoo, you’ll be able to utilize the Hammerhead Dashboard to review a summary of your power basics, such as averages and maxes, as well as more specialized data like left-right power balance and normalized power. The data shown is based on the sensors connected for your ride, so be sure your drivetrain is connected to your Karoo for additional data such as duration in each gear during a dedicated climb.
