The Basics of Bike Components.
Bearings:
Round balls that rotate on bearing surfaces inside the hub and bottom bracket.
Bottom Bracket:
Located in the bottom bracket shell, this is the bearing the cranks spin on.
Chainstays:
The frame tubes running from the bottom bracket shell to the rear dropout.
Chainring/Chainwheel:
The cogs fitted to the chainset.
Chainset:
The set includes cranks, chainrings and the bottom bracket.
Crank:
The arms that run from the pedal to the axle on the bottom bracket.
Derailleur:
When a shift lever is moved, the derailleur pushes the chain across the cogs and chainwheels.
Disc Brake:
A brake that works on a disc mounted to the hub instead of the rim.
Flange:
The spokes of the bike are threaded through this part of the hub.
Freewheel:
A hub that allows the wheel to spin after the rider stops peddling.
Front Derailleur:
The device by which the chain shifts across the chainwheels.
Grip Shift®:
Invented by SRAM in 1987, this shifter, mounted on the handlebars, lets the rider Twist Shift for gear selection. Referred to sometimes as "Moto Style".
Hub:
The mechanism that holds the bearings, as well as the spokes at the center of the wheel.
Rear Derailleur:
The device that allows the chain to move across the rear cog.
Trigger Shifter:
A type of shifter, mounted on the handlebars, that requires the user to use thumbs to click through gears
