Loonie's, Pig roasts and a weekend of winning

North America‘s biggest Gravity Festival came to a close after ten days of mind blowing action with the World‘s best athletes competing for glory and the big cash purses. Once again the people of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park managed to pour their hearts and souls into a fantastic event. Crankworx is a Festival that has something for everyone. The Bike Park itself hosted 760 racers with an enthusiastic crowd of over 25000 spectators. The SRAM truck once again took care of specific drivetrain requirements and general socializing; while Kokanee and Monster Energy battled it out for the daily thirst quenching needs of athletes and spectators alike. There was no shortage of unique entertainment over the week. Midweek saw the annual Whiffle Golf Tournament coupled with a feast fit for Royalty hosted by Chromag Bikes and BlackBoxLabs. The pig roasted over an open pit fire was the star attraction after an "exhausting" round of whiffle golf through the backwoods of Whistler. The midweek fun continued with the ever popular Loonie Race. Only in Whistler can you race your bike with over two hundred of your friends on a Thursday night! The Crown Jewel of the week is always Saturday’s Monster Energy Slopestyle, and this year‘s event was no exception. If you followed the Slopestyle season, you were no doubt impressed with Brandon Semenuk‘s (SRAM/Trek/RedBull) winning streak. As Saturday’s event unfolded, we all sat on the edges of our seats to see if Semenuk would continue his winning ways. Brandon seemed unbeatable all year, but Greg Watts (SRAM/Garyfisher) and his video game style pulled off the biggest win of his career. Greg rode a near perfect run and took the Crankworx win ahead of Brandon. Congratulations on the "One", "Two" Greg and Brandon! The final event of Crankworx is the Canadian Open Downhill. This event is near and dear to our hearts with our very own Whistler crew of Tyler Morland and Kenny Smith being co-designers and builders of this epic course. Sam Hill, Brendan Fairclough and Canadian favorite Steve Smith rode to the top of the box. They described the course as the "Best of the year!" and asked "Why don‘t you have a World Cup?" The sky is the limit in Whistler...why not a World Cup? See you next year!
