GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE IN LONDON
Jaroslav Kulhavy wins gold on SRAM XX1, SRAM sweeps the podium with Schurter and Fontana
On Sunday, August 12th, Jaroslav Kulhavy (Czech Republic – Specialized) became the new XC Champion in London, after one of the most exciting races of the year. Right off the start Kulhavy got in the lead group with Nino Schurter (Switzerland – Scott Swisspower) and Marco Aurelio Fontana (Italy – Cannondale Factory Team). The three riders pushed hard and established a gap on the rest of the field, but the race was far from over. Both Jaroslav and Nino had chosen the new SRAM XX1 drivetrain, an ideal weapon for the course in Hadleigh Farm. Each of the riders in the leading trio took turns on the front, riding on the edge through the climbs and the descents. With less than a lap to go, Fontana lost his saddle and seatpost, allowing Kulhavy and Schurter to break away. A sprint finish was inevitable, but Kulhavy motored away in the last two corners edging Schurter for gold. Fontana soldiered on and crossed the line in 3rd, making this a SRAM podium sweep. With Jaroslav Kulhvay’s victory XX1 is London and World Cup Champion in the first two XC events it was ever raced in: UNSTOPPABLE.
