Team Burry Stander – Songo wins Cape Epic, RockShox teams sweep top 5
Jaroslav Kulhavy and Cristoph Sauser (Specialized) won the 2013 Cape Epic racing as team Burry Stander – Songo. The team was created in honor of their late team mate Burry Stander, who was the victim of a car accident while training at home in South Africa last January, and to promote the Songo charity for children.
The field was stacked, with most of the top World Cup XC racers using this year’s Cape Epic as part of their training for the upcoming season. The Olympic champion Kulhavy and multi-time Cape Epic winner Sauser got stronger and faster as the race progressed over seven days of hard stages.,clinching crucial stage wins that solidified their overall placement. Both Jaroslav and Cristoph rode on SRAM XX1 drivetrain, adding yet another prestigious title to XX1’s impressive tally of Olympic, World Championship and World Cup victories.
Team Bulls 1 and 2 completed the podium, both on SID 29 and Monarch XX rear shocks, while Jose Hermida and Rudi Van Houts of Multivan Merida rode to a strong fourth place. Marco Aurelio Fontana and Manuel Fumic completed their first Cape Epic in 5th place. Current XC World Champion Nino Schurter and Florian Vogel of Scott Swisspower finished 12th after a couple of unlucky stages and a big crash that almost ended Florian’s race.
SRAM was officially present at Cape Epic to support both its sponsored athletes and all those who rode SRAM, RockShox, Avid and TRUVATIV components. With a field of 1,200 racers, the SRAM team completed an average of 100 technical support jobs each day, often working directly on the race course and late into the night.
