Javier Gomez Wins in Chicago

Javier Gomez Noya continued his season of dominance this weekend, winning the ITU WTS race in Chicago. The weekend had all of the makings for an epic battle. It was hot, windy, consisted of a bike course that had 48 turns (no, that is not a typo) and hosted virtually all of the main series contenders excluding Alistair and Johnnie Brownlee who opted not to travel since they are focusing on the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Although Javi has had some slightly concerning aches and pains leading up to this week, he toed the line intending to race it at 100%. He did that and more. In typical fashion, he swam near the front and exited the choppy waters of Lake Michigan with the leaders. The race then rolled onto the ridiculously intricate bike course that circuited Chicago’s Lakeshore Drive and Buckingham Fountain eight times, giving the huge crowd a chance to see the contenders eventually come together. For this uber demanding course Javier relied on SRAM RED 22 to be comfortable and confident on his controls for the countless up and down shifts, as well as the reliable braking into all of those turns.

The Spanish locomotive was out on the run course as if shot out of a gun, and only two contenders were able to hold the tether to him until his final surge snapped it, leaving Javi to fly through the last 2.5km solo.

This win leaves Gomez still on top of the ITU WTS leaderboard, and unbeaten on the season at the Olympic and 70.3 distances.
