Reigning Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae continues to show the world why she will wear number one this October. In Rinny’s first start at the legendary Challenge Roth on Sunday, she faced off against a pro women’s field that is second only to the field in Kona. Fellow Zipp/SRAM/Quarq athlete Caroline Steffen of Switzerland also toed the line in anticipation of a pre Kona showdown.

Carfrae started the day with a good swim, but this still left her with a deficit starting the bike. For the bike leg of this race she rode her Felt IA set up with the following gear:

 SRAM RED 22 groupset

Aero R2C shifters

SRAM RED 22 Quarq

53-39 Yaw chainrings and a 11-26 RED 1190 cassette

Zipp Firecrest 404 Carbon Clincher front wheel

Zipp Super 9 Disc Carbon Clincher rear wheel

Rinny conferred with the SRAM Road Sports Marketing crew pre race to discuss component selection. Based on prep rides on the Roth course she felt that the above gearing more closely matched the demands of the undulating course than say a 55-42 ring set up. Per Alex Wassmann director of SRAM Road Sports Marketing, “Rinny is her own CEO. She looked at the options we laid out, made choices and followed her plan”.

This set up allowed Rinny to ride strong and safe, and only have about a 6 minute gap when she arrived in T2. Leaving on the run 6 minutes behind would have most athletes worried. But, the minute Aussie was not phased by this, and started to work her way through the field. She passed Rachel Joyce for the lead with about 10k to go, and was able to enter the stadium solo and soak up the incredible atmosphere that Roth is famous for.

Rinny ended the day with a 2:53:27 marathon, and an 8:38:53 overall time. Steffen rounded out the podium with a solid third place showing. Showing this type of mid season form very clearly sends a message to the other pro women racing. That message is, if they want Rinny’s title, they will have to take it from her.
