Nino Schurter (Scott Swisspower) took a defining win in round 4 of the XC World Cup in Vallnord, Andorra, consolidating his lead in the overall ranking with only 2 races to go in the 2013 season. Schurter had to play catch-up for the entire race after the reigning Under-23 World Champion Ondrej Cink (Multivan – Merida) had established a huge gap by keeping a blistering fast pace right out of the start. The resulting battle for the win came down to the last few hundred meters of singletrack, but left both Schurter and Cink happy. Schurter is now closer than ever to his 2nd consecutive World Cup title, while Cink has put down his best World Cup finish to date, and seems eager to repeat his performance.
In the DH race all eyes were set on Sam Hill (CRC-Nukeproof) after his first place in the semi-finals. Hill missed the win by a tight margin, but his 3rd place shows he’s back on top form. Joining him on the podium was Steve Smith (Devinci Global Racing) in 4th and Troy Brosnan (Specialized) in 5th. Smith’s consistency keeps him in 2nd overall in the World Cup ranking. All three riders stood on the podium using SRAM X0 drivetrain, RockShox suspension and Avid brakes, and Smith using his TRUVATIV Blackbox signature series handlebars. A first time podium finisher, Remi Thirion (Commencal Riding Addiction) took the win using SRAM X0 drivetrain.
In the women’s field Sabine Spitz won on her SRAM XX1 drivetrain, with the newly crowned Marathon World Champion Gunn-Rita Dahle Flejsa (Multivan – Merida) on the podium with an impressive 4th place. World Cup leader Tanja Zakelj (Unior Tools) kept a steady pace to finish 5th, accumulating precious points towards the season’s finale.
