Michal the Magnificent
On Sunday in Ponferrada (Spain), 24-year-old Michal Kwiatkowski became the 2014 UCI Road World Champion -- and along the way made history in one of cycling's most grand and colorful races. The multi-talented Polish rider from Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Pro Cycling became the first ever world champion from Poland in the 81 editions of the race for the rainbow jersey.
Though still a young rider, Kwiatkowski rode like a highly experienced pro over the 254.8km of the gruelling race. After watching the U23 road race, he knew a solo victory was possible, and that's just what he did! Powered by his SRAM RED 22 groupset, Kwiatkowski left behind his rival 6 km to the finish, at the bottom of the last climb and took high risks in the descent to claim his first world title. Congratulations, Michal!
