Contador wins Vuelta with RED
SRAM RED and team Astana are two for two in Grand Tours with SRAM RED
Alberto Contador took another decisive victory Sunday in the 2008 Tour of Spain. Teammate (U.S.) Levi Leipheimer finished in second place, just 46 seconds back. The team was dominant in the time trials and mountains, taking full advantage of the light weight and solid shifting of their RED gruppos. They chose the even lighter compact cranks on the steeper mountains stages, including the sometimes 24% steep Agrilu, where Contador took the win.
Contador has become only the fifth rider in history to win all three Grand Tours (Italy, France, Spain). He won both the Giro and Spanish Tours in 2008 with SRAM’s top-level RED gruppo on his Trek Madone. The sub-2000 gram gruppo never failed the Spainard and he noted at the beginning of the year that RED had already improved his climbing due to the more than quarter-pound weight savings at the handlebars, comfortable ergonomics, and precise shifting.
We will post a release soon highlighting SRAM RED’s incredible season…congratulations to Alberto Contador, Levi Leipheimer, and team Astana on a fantastic Vuelta!
