Ascent to Victory
With a clear view of the finish Team Katusha’s Ilnur Zakarin won Wednesday’s 184.5km Tour de France stage to Finhaut-Emosson, Switzerland, in 4:36:33. The 26 year-old Russian, who had lost a contact lens that hampered his efforts to win Monday’s stage 15, powered away from the Tour’s best climbers on the 9% finishing grade.
The win marked Zakarin’s return to winning form after crashing out of the Giro’s 19th stage and suffering a fractured collarbone. Zakarin was tipped as the team’s best option for a win on a mountain stage by team director Dmitry Konyshev, and did not disappoint.
The win was the first at the 2016 Tour for the world’s lightest electronic groupset, SRAM RED® eTap®.
