Under the lights Saturday and under brilliant November skies Sunday, Stephen Hyde was simply tops among U.S. Elite Male cyclocross racers this weekend at the Derby City Cup in Louisville. The 28-year-old Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com team rider swept the weekend’s UCI C1 and C2 classification races. Hyde's mentor, reigning U.S. champion Jeremy Powers of Rapha Focus, finished second both days.
Hyde, who has a background in BMX and also races as a pro on the road, climbed to the top of U.S. 'cross in his late 20s often while battling younger athletes for results and opportunities. He collected several victories and top results last season while racing for Jeremy Power’s JAM Fund team. He finished last season with an impressive sixth place at the U.S. national championship and represented the U.S. at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Tabor. All of that earned Hyde a spot on the Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com Team – a squad that’s known both for developing top CX talent and as a destination for those riders.
“Sweeping both days in Louisville was a huge accomplishment for the Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com Team,” said Stu Thorne, team owner and manager. “But I think more importantly, it was an even greater accomplishment for Stephen. It showed that Stephen has taken another step up in his performance and that he is capable of running with the best.”
Stephen rode SRAM Force 1 with Zipp 303 Firecrest Disc-brake wheels in Louisville.
