US Cross Nationals - Gearing Choices

At this year’s US National Cyclocross Championships, hosted in Hartford, CT, we looked at the bikes of several of the the top riders (not just pros) on 1x to get the scoop on gearing selections. 1x (pronounced one-by) has been adopted by nearly 70% of the racers here. The fundamental advantages of 1x, as defined by those who will race on it, includes supreme chain security, less weight (no front derailleur) and simplicity.

The race course conditions in Hartford are constantly changing, day to day and hour to hour, so having the option to customize gearing is an extreme advantage. Riders noted that the course has very few long straightaways where pure speed is required. The course is dominated by tight technical turns and several short but steep hills, so smaller gearing (chainring) is optimal.
