Victory Bow from Bardet
Romain Bardet claims his first victory of the season
Romain Bardet (AG2R LA MONDIALE) excelled in the crucial dress rehearsal ahead of the Tour de France by winning Stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. In fact, the victory came on on a tough course very similar to what will be Stage 17 in July’s Grand Tour.
In a confident demonstration of strength and tactical savvy, Bardet attacked near the top of the Col d’Allos and increased his time advantage in the descent. The 24-year-old French rider crossed the line 26 seconds ahead of Tejay Van Garderen (USA) and 40 seconds ahead of Chris Froome (GBR), two top Tour contenders. The high mountain stage between Digne-les-Bains and Pra Loup (161km) featured five categorized climbs. Bardet is now third in the General Classification. Friday will be another challenging mountain stage: Saint-Bonnet-en-Champsaur/ Villard-de-Lans (183km).
