Ideal pedal setup is an often-undervalued building block of cycling performance.

Pedal fit is about much more than avoiding injury or joint pain. It’s about enhancing your performance on the bike. On the bike, the pedal is the only in-motion interface between the human and the machine, making it a vital component. The correct pedal makes you better, more comfortable, and efficient. Fitting your pedals to your bike (and you) is often more complex than it needs to be for riders to maximize their efficiency. With the information below, TIME seeks to simplify the process.

TIME Pedals fit most riders right out of the box, with minor adjustments needed. However, many riders need or want to fine-tune their pedal fit to fit their unique physical needs and movements better. TIME riders can adjust their pedals, cleats, and bike setup to meet their physiological needs. Here are the basic terms to know and how to make them work for you:

Proper pedal fit is determined by Q-FACTOR + 2 X PEDAL CENTER (Spindle Length) = STANCE WIDTH

Stance Width

Pedal Stance Width

What it is:

The largest of our pedal-fit metrics, this is the distance between the center of one pedal to the center of the other pedal. Think of this as the stance you have on the bike—the distance between your feet.

Why it matters:

This is the most important interface of your body and the bicycle. It is the connection point where you can transfer power from your legs into the crank and ultimately provide propulsion. Proper Stance Width is very rider dependent, but it is critical to efficient power transfer, comfort, and injury prevention.

How TIME Pedals help you:

TIME Pedals help you to adjust your Stance Width through the pedal, please refers to the Pedal Center definition below for more details. TIME’s spindle widths come in narrow, standard, wide (51, 53, 57mm). TIME added these additional spindle widths for riders to find the stance width that works best for them.

Pedal Center

TECH TIP: Pedal Center can also be referred to as spindle length.

Pedal Center (Spindle Length)

What it is:

The distance from the edge of the crankarm to the center of the pedal.

Why it matters:

Pedal Center is a part of the equation that gets your desired Stance Width.

How TIME Pedals help you:

TIME Pedals provide different option of Pedal Center on XPRO pedals to allow riders to choose their pedal center according to their anatomy and preferences. Then, rider can choose or narrow 51mm, regular 53mm or wide 57mm option.

Q-Factor

Pedal Q-Factor

What it is:

The measurement of the outside of one crankarm to the other. What’s in the name? The Q stands for “quack” to represent the wide-stance waddle of a duck. So, your bike’s Q Factor is a good starting point to look at the stance width of your feet. Like handlebar width, there is no specific methodology for determining a rider’s Q-Factor as it primarily comes from preference. The key is that there are options.

Why it matters:

Q-Factor is a part of the equation that gets your desired Stance Width.

How TIME Pedals help you:

Pedals don’t have a direct action on your Q-Factor, but please check out SRAM Crank various options to adjust your Q-Factor as you wish.
