BICYCLE PEDAL TECH & TERMS
Looking for bicycle pedals can be hard. What does cleat float mean? What should my spring tension be? Our SRAM guide to pedal terms is here to help!
Cleat Float: TIME Pedals offers cleats that are “fixed” or “free,” meaning they have float. Free cleats allow angular and lateral freedom to allow the natural movements of your joints when the cleat is clipped into the pedal. Many cyclists use cleats with float to avoid potential knee problems if the cleat is slightly misaligned. TIME offers 5 degrees of angular float and 1.25mm of lateral float. A 0 degree fixed cleat also is available. BACK TO PEDAL GUIDE
Pedal tension: This is the amount of effort needed to release the foot from the pedal. Increased tension requires more effort and decreased tension less effort to remove your foot from the pedal. Factors determining a rider’s pedal tension depend on factors including personal preference, ride style, and experience. BACK TO PEDAL GUIDE
Spring tension adjustment and the benefits of each setting
- High: Security and efficiency for aggressive riding and sprinting. A popular setting for experienced riders.
- Medium: An optimized setting for ridings gaining confidence in clipless pedal while retaining the ability to remove foot from pedal easily.
- Low: Often used by riders new to clipless pedals to ensure they can twist their foot out of the pedal when needed.
