Focusing in on Jeremy Powers' Race Machine

U.S. National Champ Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) and his mechanic Tom Hopper are known for being incredibly meticulous when it comes to bike setup. Every part is scrutinized and thoughtfully chosen to give Powers the best possible chance of winning on race day.

We took an in-depth look at Powers’ race bike at the Gloucester CX Grand Prix weekend. With a mixture of SRAM RED and Force 1, no stone was left unturned in the quest for the lightest possible setup. Although Powers has the option of riding hydraulic disc brakes, at Gloucester he opted for rim brakes due to the dry conditions and relatively flat course profile. Plus it saves just a bit more weight.

For the drivetrain, Powers went with a 44-tooth Force 1 X-Sync chainring mated to a SRAM RED BB30 crankset. On the back end of the drivetrain there’s a similar theme, Powers makes use of a roller bearing clutch equipped Force 1 rear derailleur to direct the SRAM RED chain across a SRAM RED X-Glide 1190 cassette.

Handling shifting duties is the SRAM Force 1 shift lever. With carbon brake lever blades, a shifter-less left brake lever, and a carbon shift paddle on the right side; the Force 1 mechanical brake/shift lever set is the lightest set SRAM makes.

For wheels Powers relies on the same tough hoops that UCI WorldTour riders use for the brutal spring classics, the Zipp 303 Firecrest tubular. Glued to the 303 Firecrest rims are prototype FMB tubulars with a special casing, tread compound, and file tread design. The tread design is a hybrid of FMB’s Sprint tread down the center, fortified with the company’s Super Mud side lugs for confident cornering, even on damp grass or loose dirt.

All of J-Pow’s and Hopper’s careful parts selection definitely paid off in Gloucester. In a race where the powerful three-man-strong Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld.com squad was set to dismantle Powers piece by piece, Jeremy withstood their challenge to sweep both days and bring home the Gloucester CX GP title.
