The Lightest Electronic Drivetrain

On a top tier bike,  every gram matters. Weight savings is a consistent theme in our product development for professional racers and everyday riders. We reduced weight everywhere possible over previous generation RED eTap AXS, Force AXS, and Rival eTap AXS so that SRAM RED, Force, and Rival AXS are effortlessly lightweight, representing the lightest electronic groupsets at each tier.

Controls

In addition to adding comfort and power to the RED, Force, and Rival AXS brakes, we shaved grams between the lever and caliper. When climbing on the hoods, swinging the bike side to side, it’s a weight reduction you can feel. RED controls shed 83 grams, Force 74 grams, and Rival 72.

Crank and Chainrings

Our drivetrain product development team refined the carbon layup process of the RED crank arms, with a little help from the carbon experts at Zipp, resulting in a 29-gram weight savings for the crank set with no loss of stiffness. We developed an entirely new crankarm for Force, removing over 30 grams. And Rival gets the most dramatic makeover of all. The new aluminum arms with a cutout drop over 50 grams from the set.

Chains

Additionally, the RED chain has been updated with our HollowPin construction. This technology is lighter and stronger than a solid pin, and cutouts in the inner and outerouter plates drop the chain’s weight by 13 grams. Force combines inner and outer plate cutouts with a solid pin to drop 11 grams compared to the previous generation, with Rival adding outer plate cutouts.

Rear and Front Derailleurs

The rear derailleur received a larger pulley wheel and ceramic bearings and has shed 16 grams overall. The front derailleur is not only faster and more precise, it’s 4 grams lighter.

Rotors

The Paceline X rotors combined are 8 grams lighter than the previous generation, thanks to refinements to the aluminum carrier.

Rear and Front Derailleurs

The RED rear derailleur received a larger pulley wheel and ceramic bearings and has shed 16 grams overall. The front derailleur is not only faster and more precise, it’s 4 grams lighter. Force adopts RED's rear derailleur architecture and larger lower pulley, and is now 12 grams lighter. Rival sheds 20 g with some careful revisions to the existing materials.

Methodology

Depending on how a component is configured, weights can vary. Here is an overview of exactly which elements are included in SRAM road 2x groupset weight measurements.

  • Crankset: 172.5mm crank arm length, 48/35 chainrings
  • Cassette: 10-28 for RED, 10-30 for Force and Rival
  • Power meter: 172.5mm crank arm length, 48/35 chainrings, coin cell battery
  • Bottom bracket: BSA standard and appropriate spacers for 68mm shell
  • Rear derailleur: Rear derailleur with no battery
  • Front derailleur: Front derailleur with no battery, braze on, wedge, mounting bolt and washer
  • Left shift-brake system:  Complete lever with coin cell battery, 950 mm hose with Stealthamajig, caliper, all hydraulic fluid, and 42 mm mounting bolts with brake pads
  • Right shift-brake system: Complete lever with coin cell battery, 1800 mm hose with Stealthamajig, caliper, all hydraulic fluid, and 32 mm mounting bolts with brake pads
  • Chain: 114 links
  • Rotors: 2 160mm Centerlock rotors and SRAM lockrings
