Boost your bike knowledge and stay focused on the road ahead with some simple tips and tricks.

DIAL IN YOUR DRIVETRAIN 

If your bike hasn’t been set up by a professional mechanic, follow these steps for ideal drivetrain performance:

STEP 1: Make sure the derailleur hanger is straight using a hanger alignment gauge. A bent hanger will cause inconsistent shifting and excessive noise.

STEP 2: Adjust the high and low limit screws according to specifications. Limit screws will allow a full range of shifting while limiting the derailleur from damaging your spokes or frame.

STEP 3: Check the chain gap and adjust if necessary. Chain gap is the distance between the cassette and the derailleur pulley wheels. Correct chain gap finds the optimal balance between fast and smooth shifting. If the chain gap is too small, shifting will be rough and noisy. If the chain gap is too big, shifting will be slow and inconsistent.  

STEP 4: Use MicroAdjust to optimize rear derailleur shift performance or eliminate unwanted rasping sounds before, during, or after rides. MicroAdjust compensates for the subtle variations that occur between bikes and there are no tools required. Simply use your shift paddle and AXS button, or the SRAM AXS app.

AXS BUTTONS EXPLAINED

The AXS buttons on your derailleurs and controllers do multiple things. Locate the AXS button next to the “AXS” logo on your components: inside the shift paddle on a drop bar controller and on the front of the derailleurs.

• Pressing the AXS button on a derailleur will actuate a shift. On a rear derailleur, one press will shift it outboard and two quick presses will shift it inboard. The front derailleur will automatically shift into the other chainring with a single press.

• Check the battery status on your AXS components with a single press of the AXS button. The LED next to the button will light green or red, letting you know how much charge remains.

• When pairing AXS components, you’ll also be using AXS buttons and their LEDs as part of that procedure.

• LEDs illuminate orange/amber when you connect to the AXS app and during firmware updates initiated within the app.

• To prevent cross-chaining, the rear derailleur LED will alternate red and green when preventing a shift into the 10T cog while riding in the small chainring. It will also display red and green lights when shifting is blocked to prevent motor damage in extremely cold temperatures.

ROADSIDE RESET

Your complete bike probably came with AXS components already paired and ready to ride. But it’s good to know the pairing procedure if you are adding a Reverb AXS, Wireless Blip, or replacing a crashed part.

If your paired drivetrain stops shifting, it may be something as simple as a derailleur battery that needs charging or controller battery that needs replacing. Check the battery status by pressing the AXS button on each part. No light? That battery is out of juice. If the batteries have power, re-pair the system according to this process.

TECH TIP: If your rear derailleur battery runs out mid-ride, swap the front derailleur battery to the rear to get home with more gears.

CLEAN IS FAST—AND LASTS

Cleaning will extend your drivetrain’s lifespan while ensuring you get the best performance ride after ride. Your Force AXS IPX7 rating means it is built to withstand creek crossings, rain, and routine cleaning.

HOW TO CLEAN:
1. Remove the derailleur battery and install the red battery block.
2. Use a damp cloth to wipe off any dirt and debris.
3. Clean the components with soap and water. Harsh degreasers will lead to damaged seals.
4. Avoid direct pressure washing to protect the components as you would with all the seals and bearings on any bike.
5. Rinse thoroughly and allow the parts to dry, then lubricate with your favorite chain lube and wipe away the excess.

HOW TO DEAL WITH NORMAL WEAR & TEAR

A handful of items on your AXS system will require routine maintenance or replacement. Here are the top three components to monitor:

Compatible tools

Chains will wear differently depending on ride conditions and cleaning habits, so you’ll want to measure its wear regularly. Check it with an approved tool and replace it before it’s worn beyond 0.8%. Replacing your chain on time gives more life to your cassette and chainrings: A cassette may last through several chains, and your chainrings can last for many years.

Controller batteries can last two years or more depending on how often you shift. Force AXS shifters use a standard CR2032 battery secured by a battery cover located under the hydraulic brake hoods. Using quality brand name batteries without a child-safe bitter coating increases lifespan and improves battery status accuracy.

TECH TIP: To avoid letting brake fluid out of the system, do not open the brake reservoir cover. Doing so will require a brake bleed.

Brake pads and rotors only take a minute to check every few rides. Conditions and pad compound will affect overall pad life. Grit and grime between the braking surfaces will accelerate wear. Replace brake pads if the total thickness of the pad and backing are thinner than 3mm and replace rotors when they measure 1.55mm thick or less.

TECH TIP: When replacing rotors, replace the pads as well. Then perform the brake bed-in procedure to gain the most stopping power, reduced brake noise, and long-lasting performance.
